Things Go WELLS at the Bowl

7-22-2010

In a wild ending to the modified feature Don Mattison picked up his first win on the pavement at Devil’s Bowl Sunday night.  It was a good night for the town of Wells, Vermont as Mattison’s co resident Don Miller scored his 4th win of the season in the sportsman race.   As the modified race neared the finish Mattison who had led all race long received heavy pressure from Tim Laduc who was also feeling the heat from Marc Johnson and Vince Quenneville.  Laduc washed high coming out turn 4 with 2 laps to go allowing Johnson to pass.  Quenneville and Laduc then battled for third with the two making contact several times and Quenneville finished in third with a shower of sparks underneath his car.  There was a post race altercation between the two which resulted in Laduc being disqualified. Marc Johnson would finish second followed by Quenneville, Leon Gonyo and Don Scarborough.

In the sportsman race it was Don Miller coming from 10th to score his 4th win of the season getting by Jack Swinton in the closing laps.  Hunter Bates, Jared McMahon and Alex Bell rounded out the top five.  In the renegade feature Randy Alger appeared to have the race in hand until he was spun late in the event handing the lead over to teammate Frank Monroe who met the same fate a lap later.  This gave the lead to Bill Duprey who held on for his first win of the season snapping Jon Millers 5 race win streak.  Chad Brown appeared to have his 6th win of the season in the Bomber Warriors but a post race disqualification moved Colin Clow up to the win   In the Duke Stock race Garret Givin made it five in row.  Tyler Davis of Mount Holly won the spectator race.

In other weekend action Albany Saratoga and Glen Ridge fell victim to rain on Friday night.  Pittsford’s Kyle Davis finished 2nd at Twin State Friday night.  Davis is only a handful of points out of first in the strictly stock division.   On Saturday Lacey Hanson was a winner at Bear Ridge in the Granite State mini sprints.  Don Scarborough picked up an invitation only 12 lap 1200 to win race at Airborne Speedway.  Eddie Marshall won his 2nd in a row at Lebanon Valley and AJ Romano was the winner at Fonda.   Johnny the Jet Scarborough has a 60 point plus lead in the budget sportsman point standings at Fonda with just 4 weeks and 5 races to go.

Coming up on the racing docket this weekend all the above mentioned tracks will be back in action with Lebanon Valley Speedway hosting the World of Outlaw sprint car series on Sunday night and Fonda Speedway hosting the Lucas Oil Late Model series.  The Vermontsportsnow.com crew plans to be attendance for those events.

Oh yes and the fun bus was back in action at Devils Bowl Sunday night as kids are given a tour of the race track and pits.  It was Rutland’s John Vitagliano behind the wheel as John will be the driver of the bus in 2010.    Until next week keep on racing!!!!!!

Jet reaches a Milestone

6-30-2010

With rain washing out the action on Saturday night at Fonda Bomoseen’s Johnny the Jet Scarborough was among the Fonda regulars who ventured to Utica Rome Speedway on Sunday night. The trek to the Vernon, New York facility proved fruitful for Scarborough as he took home the win in the 602 budget sportsman feature. The victory was a milestone for the Brandon, Vermont native as it was his 50th career sportsman win. Scarborough has raced and won at several racetracks over years including Fonda, Utica Rome, Lebanon Valley, Devils Bowl, Frogtown and Twin State Speedway. Congratulations go out to the Jet on his accomplishment.

Londonderry’s Rob Langevin also ventured to Utica Rome and came home seventh in the sportsman feature. In Devils Bowl’s modified feature Sunday night Jimmy Ryan, Don Scarborough, Mike Bruno and Vince Quenneville made an all Vermont top five with the exception of race winner Ken Tremont. Jared McMahon and Hunter Bates finished 2nd and 4th respectively in the sportsman feature. Billy Duprey was 2nd behind Jon Miller in the Renegade division.

Saturday night at Lebanon Valley Ray Hoard picked up his 2nd win of the season in the modifieds on the high banks. This is great for Ray as after his first win on the year he was involved in a vicious crash the next week. Lets hope this 2nd win is a springboard to a good rest of the season at the high banks for racing Ray. Chuck Towslee had a 6th place run in the Pro Stock event. Pittsford’s Kyle Davis was a winner again at Twin State Speedway a week ago Friday in the strictly stock class. Davis is currently 2nd in the point standings. Incidentally the Super Street class lead by Mendon’s Chris Wilk will be on hand at Devils Bowl Sunday night July 4th for a 50 lap combination race with the CVRA pro stocks.

The Brandon Bandit Don Scarborough is having a consistent season in 2010 after winning the opening night feature at Devils Bowl Scarborough sits 2nd in the points at the Bowl. He is also 5th at Malta and 3rd at Airborne Speedway. Coming up this weekend will be a big 4th of July weekend of racing at all the area tracks. Fireworks will fill the sky and probably the race track too. Check back next week to see how our Vermont boys fair.

Until then keep on racing!!!!!

Jimmy Ryan wins at Malta

6-15-2010

June 8, 2001 and June 25, 2006 those two dates mark the last time Jimmy Ryan and Mike Bruno won at Albany Saratoga Speedway and Devils Bowl respectively.  This past weekend they both posted victories on the newly paved surfaces of the CVRA.  Friday night Ryan came off the front row and held off the charges of defending track champion Kenny Tremont for the win.  At Devils Bowl Sunday night Bruno started on the outside pole but secured the race lead as the cars came off of turn two for the first time and led the entire distance for the win.  Much like Friday night for Ryan there was Tremont again in Bruno's tire tracks but he was unable to get by.

Looking at some other locals racing results  Hunter Bates and Fast Freddie Little both placed 4th at Malta Friday night.  Bates was in the sportsman class while Little ran the pro streets.  At the Bowl Sunday night Don Scarborough backed up his opening night win with a fourth place run while Jimmy Ryan backed up his Friday night win with a 5th place run.   Vince Quenneville finished 4th at Airborne Speedway Saturday night and then 8th on Sunday  night at the Bowl.   Tim Laduc after starting on the pole Sunday night was involved in an early frontstrech altercation but recovered nicely to finish 9th after going to the rear of the field.   Don Miller of Wells made it three for three in Sportsman wins at the Bowl on Sunday night.

Shifting over to the grantie state of New Hampshire Mendon's Chris Wilk picked up the win in the super street division at Twin State Speedway on Friday night where he is the point leader.  Wilk will lead the charge next Sunday at Devils Bowl as the Super Street class will race along with the CVRA pro stocks in 20 lap affair.  This is a tune up for a 50 lap show at the Bowl on July 4th.

Mother nature came a big winner on Saturday night raining out Fonda and Lebanon Valley Speedway.  Fonda was able to get in their Allstar sprint show on Thursday night after Wednesday's rain.   Daryn Pittman was the winner with Ronnie Johnson taking the companion modified event.

Until next week keep on racing folks!!!!!!!!!!!

Mother Nature Comes out on Top

6-8-2010

Well race fans much of this past weekends racing action to kickoff the month of June fell victim to Mother Nature in the form of rain.  Devils Bowl was postponed on Sunday by an all day rain.  Saturday night action at Fonda also fell victim to the wet stuff.  However there was some racing action over the weekend involving several of our green mountain boys and girls.

Saturday night at Lebanon Valley Speedway Steve Hough picked up the win in the modified feature but it was a tough night for the Vermont boys with Neil Stratton finishing 18th, Ray Hoard 24th and Hector Stratton 25th.    In the  Budget Sportsman feature with Fonda rained out Johnny the Jet Scarborough made the trek to the high banks and finished 14th in the 31 car field.    Manchester's Chuck Towslee was 6th in the Pro Stock feature.

Dawn of a new Era

Pembroke Out Races Bruno in 1st ever ACT Race at the Bowl

5-24-2010

Well race fans some will argue dirt is for racing and asphalt is for getting there and some will say dirt is for farming and asphalt is for racing.  Either way a new era of racing began Sunday  afternoon at Devils Bowl Speedway in West Haven, Vermont as the newly paved facility swung open its doors for the 2010 racing season.  On hand were the ACT type Late Models from Thunder Road Speedway in Barre, Vermont to battle for 100 laps.

Gorham New Hampshire's Traci Bellerose started on the pole but it was eventual race winner Dave Pembroke of Montpelier who stated 3rd and took the lead on lap 14.  While Pembroke was working his way out in front Mike Bruno a Castleton native who cut his racing teeth at the Bowl in its dirt days started 7th and was using the outside groove to propel himself into second and began pressuring race leader Pembroke.    Bruno has a wealth of pavement experience himself as he raced the Busch North Series several years back.  He has also won the last two features on Friday nights at the Bowl' sister track Albany Saratoga.

Anyhow Bruno and Pembroke battled door to door for the next several laps with Bruno finally gaining the race lead on lap 33.  He would hold that position until lap 33 just past halfway when Pembroke used a restart to go by him on the outside and despite heavy pressure from Bruno for the remainder of the race Pembroke held on for the win.   Bellerose settled for third  with Brent Dragon fourth and Joey Becker fifth.  Dragon the son of the legendary Beaver Dragon started the race 14th and by lap 4 had worked his way into the top five.  It seemed like Brent would be soon up challenging the front duo of Pembroke and Bruno but he faded late and had to settled for fourth.

In the sportsman class at the Bowl Don Miller wired the field for the win with young Hunter Bates coming home 3rd.  Bates picked up his first ever win Friday nigh at Albany Saratoga and hasn't yet finished out of the top five there.  He has really adapted to the asphalt.  Bates is the son of Marc Bates who has been a long time crew member of teams such as Todd Stone.

Randy Alger came home fourth in the Bomber class which used to be the limited division.  Brandon's Don Scarborough had a 4th place finish both Friday night at Albany Saratoga and Saturday at Airborne.  Pittsford's Brian Whittemore finished 5th at Bear Ridge Speedway Saturday with the Sportsman modifieds.    Rob Langevin was 4th at Fonda in the sportsman while Todd and Gardner Stone finished 6th and 8th respectively at Mohawk Intl. Raceway in Hogansburg, NY

Vermonter's Cassidy Wilson and Johnny the Jet Scarborough picked up feature wins at Fonda Saturday night.  Wilson in the street stocks and Scarborough in the 602 budget sportsman.  How about Racing Ray Hoard who has made his Saturday night home at Lebaon Valley Speedway after the CVRA switch to asphalt.  Hoard picked up his first career win on the high banks Saturday night.

This coming weekend the Memorial Day weekend is a race fans dream as all of the above mentioned will be in action and then if you turn on the tube you've got the big ones in the Indianapolis 500 and the Coca Cola 600 for Indy Cars and NASCAR respectively.   In closing hope everyone has a HAPPY Memorial Day and we have good racing weather for that weekend.  Until then keep on racing!!!!!!

Matty D 4,444.44 richer at Fonda

5-18-2010

One might be the loneliest number and seven might be lucky but at Fonda Speedway Saturday night 4 was the number to be.  The entire night was a tribute the legendary Lou Lazzaro  and his famed number 4 who won a 113 career wins at the famed track of champions along the banks of the Mohawk River.  Lazzaro know as the " Monk, the Legend and the incomparable one also captured 4 track championships at Fonda.    Lazzaro's Last win at Fonda came on May 15th, 1999 at the age of 64.  Prior to Saturday nights feature a replay of Jim King calling the final laps of that win was played over the tracks public address system for all to enjoy.   Lazzaro qualified for his last modified feature on April 29, 2000 at Fonda then pulled in the pits after the race starting saying he wasn't feeling well.  Lazzaro was stricken with a stroke soon after and died several days later at the age of 65.  His number has since been retired at Fonda

As for the racing  Saturday night Finally a weekend where rain didn't factor into the local racing scene.   With 4 being the theme for the night at Fonda each of the 4 heat race winners received 444 dollars for their efforts.  Before the modified feature which was to be 44 laps a special dash was held for Fonda drivers who had won a track championship  Defending track champion collected the win in this event.  Ronnie Johnson was voted into the field by the fans despite not being a past champion.  This was only fitting as Ronnie's Dad Jumpin Jack Johnson is the speedways all time whinniest driver with a 149 wins and 12 track tittles.  Although on hand the 64 year old has been out from behind the wheel since a vicious crash at Fonda last summer and hopes to return some time this summer.

When the dust settled for the modified feature paying 4444. 44 to win it was Matt Delorenzo who charged from deep in the field and ran down early race leader Elmo Reckner to take home the big win.

In other racing action involving our local Vermont boys.   Cassidy Wilson won his second street stock race of the season at Fonda.  Johnny the Jet Scarborough came home 4th in the 602 sportsman feature and Rob Langevin was 3rd in the sportsman class.  At Lebanon Valley  Ray Hoard was 13th in the modified feature and Hector and Neil Stratton were 14th and 16th.  C.G. Morey was 18th in the 358 feature and Chuck Towslee was 9th in the Pro Street race.

Shifting over to action in the Granite State of New Hampshire.  Pittsford's Kyle Davis was the winner on May 7th in the strictly stock class.  Davis then finished in 2nd on the 14th of May and currently sits 2nd in the point standings at Twin State Speedway in Claremont.   Mendon's Chris Wilk had three consecutive 2nd place runs in the Super Streets last weekend at Canaan and Twin State and again this weekend at Twin State where Wilk is the points leader.   Rutland's Dallas Trombley finished 5th in the Late Models.

At Albany Saratoga Speedway on Friday night in Malta, New York  Brandon's Don Scarborough was 6th and Shoreham's Jimmy Ryan 10th.  Scarborough also finished 3rd Saturday night at Airborne Speedway.   Hunter Bates finished 5th in the sportsman class his third consecutive top 5 finish.   Freddie Little placed 4th in the Pro Street race.

Coming up this Sunday May 23rd Devils Bowl Speedway in West Haven will open for the season.  The track has just been newly paved and from all accounts of this last weekends practice looks to be fast and racy.   The season will kick off with the Thunder Road Late Models at 2pm on Sunday racing 100 laps at the Bowl.   This race will count towards Thunder Road's Late Model track championship.   Until next weekend keep on racing!!!

Racing Beetween the Raindrops
5-10-2010

While mother nature in the form of rain was the big winner on Saturday night washing out the action at Fonda, Lebanon Valley and Airborne as well as several other speedways there was still plenty of racing action involving our Green Mountain boys throughout the Mothers Day weekend.

Friday night marked the first regular show of the season on the new pavement at Albany Saratoga Speedway and although it was a familiar last name in victory lane in the modifieds Johnson it was not who most would have expected.  No it was not the legendary Jack Johnson or his son Ronnie nor brothers Alan or Danny Johnson.   In fact it was young Marc Johnson (no relation to the above) who has been a regular at the great race place now for several years coming into his own and Friday night he finally picked off his first ever win in the 358 modifieds at Albany Saratoga and he held off defending track champ Kenny Trmeont to do it.

For the Vermont boys it was pretty good showing as Mike Bruno, Don Scarborough and Jimmy Ryan came home 4th through 6th in the modified feature.   Fast Freddie Little picked up a 4th place finish in the pro street race and Hunter Bates was also 4th in the sportsman feature.

Middlebury's Todd Stone was 8th in the modified feature on Friday night at Mohawk International Raceway in Hogansburg, New York.     Several locals were scheduled to be in action at Twin State Speedway in Claremont, New Hampshire on Friday night and Big Daddy's Speedbowl in Rumney, New Hampshire on Sunday.  Results were not available at press time.

Devils Bowl Speedway received its first layer of pavement on Friday May 7th as it prepares for th season opener on May 23rd when the ACT Tour comes to town.

In closing some sad news from the local racing scene.  Former Devils Bowl and Claremont Speedway racer Matt Waite of Pawlet was killed in a freak accident when a tree fell on his pickup truck on Friday.   Waite was 50 years old.   Condolences go out to Matt's family and friends.

Coming up next week the Lou Lazzaro Memorial race at Fonda Speedway.  Until then keep on racing!!!!

Northeast Racing in Full Swing 5-3-10

Castleton's Johnny the Jet Scarborough Wins at Fonda

Well race fans the month of May is upon us and that means that racing across the northeast is in full swing.  After the weather last Wednesday and Thursday we had to wonder if we would have been better off to have snowmobile races instead.  But as every good New Englander knows snow this time of year dosent last long.

Anyway many of our fellow green mountain boys and girls were action this weekend across the northeast.  Starting at Fonda Speedway where Dave Camara came home 7th in the modified feature and Bomoseen's Johnny the Jet Scarborough picked up the win in the 602 budget sportsman class. Londonderry's Rob Langevin also finished 8th in the sportsman feature.  Well's Don Mattison placed 9th in the modified feature at Glen Ridge on Friday night.

A contingent of Vermonters including Jimmy Ryan, Vince Quenneville, Don Scarborough and Mike Bruno made the trek to Airborne Speedway in Plattsburgh Saturday night with Ryan placing the highest in 15th.   Pittsford resident Hunter Bates finished 5th in the Sportsman class at Albany Saratoga Speedway on Sunday afternoon.

Shifting over to the Granite State Mendon's Chris Wilk won the Super Street feature at Twin State Speedway in Claremont, New Hampshire.   Kayla Bryant who was a multi time winner in the mini stock class last year at Devils Bowl came home 4th.  Pittsford's Kyle Davis was 5th in the Strictly Stock class and Rutland's Dallas Trombley was 5th  in the Late Model division.

Lots of racing will be on tap in the month of May and we will hope to see you at some of hit and scour the world wide web to keep on our locals for those events we cant make. Until next week keep on racing!!!

Thundering Along the Mohawk  2-25-2010

Saturday night the 24th of April marked the first night of the point’s race at the famed Fonda Speedway and for this scribe the first chance I have had to get out to a racetrack in the young 2010 season.  I must say that despite living here in Vermont I don’t get a chance to get to Fonda all the often but every time I go there I have a great time.  The track and surrounding scenery is very picturesque as it sits along the banks of the Mohawk River on at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds.

A packed house got to enjoy the good night of racing on the tricky d shaped track of champions.  Ronnie Johnson of nearby Duanesburg, New York came home with the convincing win over Jimmy Davis. The win was RJ’s 2nd of the weekend as he captured the feature win on Friday night at Accord Speedway.   Johnson is the son of the legendary Jumpin Jack Johnson who currently holds the record for most wins all time at Fonda in the modified division with 149.  However Johnson has been absent from the weekly racing wars at Fonda since last summer after a racing crash and some subsequent health problems.  Let’s hope the Jumper can get back to good health and go for number 150.  Fonda just doesn’t seem the same without the familiar orange number 12a motoring around the track.

on Saturday night at Fonda Speedway.

It was a good night at Fonda for the green mountain boys of the state of Vermont.  Cassidy Wilson picked up the win in the street stock feature.  Wilson makes a 75 mile haul each week to race at Fonda.   Dave Camara finished a strong third in the modified right behind Johnson and Davis.    It was a rough night for some of the Vermont boys as John Scarborough made contact with the wall while trying to overtake a lap car after battling with Ray Zemken for the first 10 to 12 laps of the feature.  Frank Hoard III just couldn’t get his car to handle the way he wanted and was unable to qualify for the modified feature.  Also Jeff Washburn was an early retiree in the pro street feature.

Wandering around the Pits-   A big congratulations goes out to Angela Hoard Hanson and her husband modified racer Craig Hanson.  They are expecting their first child and Angela is due is late September or early October.   Angela is the daughter of Frank Hoard of Manchester, Vermont.  The entire Hoard family has been long time racers and supporters at the CVRA tracks and Fonda and are great people to talk racing with.    It was nice to see many locals in and around the pits at Fonda and it’s always nice at the first race of the season to catch up with old racing friends you don’t get to see during the winter months.  Had a chance to chat with Pit Steward Steve Buerga and his daughter they are both great people and do a wonderful job keeping things rolling in the pit area.   In closing being a member of the media is a privilege and I would certainly like to thank the staff at Fonda for their hospitality.
